About Storyworth

Storyworth’s purpose is to help people record the meaningful stories of their life. We offer a service that helps people record their family stories and print them in beautiful keepsake books.

Our work is truly worthwhile. Many of our customers describe us as the best gift they’ve ever given or received. We bring people closer to the people who matter most to them, and the books we print will be passed down for generations.

We’re a sustainable business. Our business model is aligned with our customers’ interests. We’re cash flow positive with ample cash on hand, so we don’t need to fundraise. We’ve been around since 2012.

We’re an unusually small team for our revenue, and we intend to keep it that way. We get a lot done with little overhead by hiring thoughtfully and cultivating a close-knit team that balances autonomy and collaboration without an excess of meetings or busy-work. Our team is fully remote, spanning Italy to Hawai’i. While we do a lot of work asynchronously, we really enjoy our virtual time together to catch up and connect.

We’re building out our core engineering team to make better products that reach more customers and deepen their relationships with us. We see an opportunity to positively impact millions and grow our revenue 10x. Having a first-rate engineering team is a key component of how we will get there.

About You

You are an optimist and an all-around good human being. Life is short, and you want to work with people you like. You are kind, generous, and empathetic. You are honest and trustworthy. You want to work every day with positive people who make your day better.

You value time and freedom. You want your work in harmony with your life. You want to pick your kids up from school, go for a walk with a friend, care for your aging parents, and/or invest meaningful time in a personal passion. You’re comfortable working remotely. You want the option to move to a different state or country, for a few months or forever. You want a job that complements your life, not one that is in conflict with it.

You care deeply about doing great work. You are among the best at your craft. You have the choice of where to work and with whom, and you want to make sure that you’re doing something worthwhile. You hold yourself accountable, and the team can always rely on you to deliver, just as you can rely on them. You thrive when you are given responsibility and autonomy.

Your ideal outcome is a long term relationship. You’re looking to settle into a great company, get to know a product well, and do better and better work as you gain experience. Life happens and plans change, but you think of the opportunity as open-ended.

Role

You’re a full stack generalist who can design and build a web application from scratch. You gain satisfaction from solving the right problems in the right way, whether it’s a quick fix to keep legacy code humming, or a whole new stack to envision a new product experience. You build things well as a point of pride, even when no one is looking. You’ve launched and supported your code in high traffic environments.

You’ll help us maintain our current features and build new products. Our site has scaled nicely even through significant traffic growth, so you won’t be fighting fires. Both our Head of Engineering (3.5 years at Storyworth) and Founder (12 years) are hands-on developers who know the code base, so you won’t be abandoned to a pile of mysterious legacy. We have a product roadmap, but you will have a say in what we do and how we do it.

You have strong product sensibilities. You enjoy participating in design and product conversations. You can provide thoughtful feedback to designs, and you care about all the details that go into great user experiences. You’re comfortable rounding out the missing details in product specs by intuition. You understand and care about how customers use the products you build.

You thrive in a small team where you can earn trust to work autonomously. You can get a lot done quickly without supervision, knowing when and how to coordinate with leads and colleagues. You communicate clearly and concisely both in meetings and in type. You’re happy to take turns leading and following on projects.

You just want to get stuff done. Your contributions will noticeably increase our team’s velocity. You can figure out the most efficient way to build and launch something new. You know how to fill in the gaps in requirements. You don’t need your hand held to make decisions and move forward. You can sense the right level of investment for a given task and make trade-offs accordingly. You’re eager to just keep shipping.
